NFL betting in Australia is built around Monday mornings: an NFL Sunday in the US is a Monday in eastern Australia, and online betting on each game closes at kick-off. You bet on the head to head, the line, total points or player props in decimal odds, with a bookmaker licensed in an Australian state or territory.
Two features of the NFL decide many of those bets. A regular-season game still level after one 10-minute overtime period ends as a tie, and final margins bunch on 3 and 7 points: of the 1,359 regular-season games completed from 2021 to 2025, 199 (14.6%) were decided by exactly 3. The guide to US sports betting from Australia sets the NFL beside the NBA, MLB and NHL.
NFL betting markets in decimal odds
Australian bookmakers price the NFL in the same market types as the AFL or NRL, under Australian names. US coverage has its own word for each:
| Market | US name | Your bet wins when | Overtime counts? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Head to head | Moneyline | Your team wins | Usually |
| Line | Point spread | Your team leads after the points start | Usually |
| Total points | Over/under | The combined score is over or under the number | Usually |
| Player props | Props | A player's yards, catches or touchdowns reach the mark | Usually |
| First-half and first-quarter markets | First half, first quarter | The score in that period | No |
| Futures | Futures | A season-long result, such as the Super Bowl winner | Not relevant |
Usually means under the common rule type; your bookmaker's terms decide.
Here is one illustrative game and how a 24-20 win for Team A settles $20 on each of four bets:
| Bet | Price | What happened | $20 returns |
|---|---|---|---|
| Team A head to head | $1.60 | Team A won | $32.00 |
| Team A -3.5 (line) | $1.92 | 24 - 3.5 = 20.5, ahead of 20 | $38.40 |
| Over 46.5 total points | $1.90 | 24 + 20 = 44, under the number | Nothing: the bet lost |
| Team A's quarterback to pass for 250 yards or more | $2.10 | He passed for 268 | $42.00 |
Each return is stake x price, so the head to head pays 20 x 1.60 = $32.00, a $12.00 profit. Had Team A won 23-20 instead, the head to head would still have won while the -3.5 bet lost, which is the case NFL line betting works through.
Previews and broadcasts in the US quote American odds. With a minus price such as -165, you stake $165 for every $100 of profit, so it converts to 100 / 165 + 1 = $1.61. With a plus price such as +155, $100 makes $155 profit: 155 / 100 + 1 = $2.55. The odds converter does the sum as you type.
What time NFL games kick off in Australia
The NFL's 2026 schedule, released on 14 May 2026, runs 18 weeks and 272 games from Wednesday 9 September 2026 to Week 18 on 9 and 10 January 2027 (US dates). From 1 November, US Eastern time is 16 hours behind Sydney, so an American evening is an Australian morning or lunchtime the next day.
Even the first regular-season NFL game played in Australia, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, kept US prime time: 8:35 pm Thursday US Eastern time, or 10:35 am AEST on Friday 11 September 2026.
The regular slots fall at these local times from 1 November 2026 to the Super Bowl:
| US Eastern kick-off | Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart (AEDT) | Adelaide (ACDT) | Brisbane (AEST) | Perth (AWST) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thursday 8:15 pm | Friday 12:15 pm | Friday 11:45 am | Friday 11:15 am | Friday 9:15 am |
| Sunday 9:30 am (games in Europe) | Monday 1:30 am | Monday 1:00 am | Monday 12:30 am | Sunday 10:30 pm |
| Sunday 1:00 pm | Monday 5:00 am | Monday 4:30 am | Monday 4:00 am | Monday 2:00 am |
| Sunday 4:05 pm | Monday 8:05 am | Monday 7:35 am | Monday 7:05 am | Monday 5:05 am |
| Sunday 4:25 pm | Monday 8:25 am | Monday 7:55 am | Monday 7:25 am | Monday 5:25 am |
| Sunday 8:20 pm | Monday 12:20 pm | Monday 11:50 am | Monday 11:20 am | Monday 9:20 am |
| Monday 8:15 pm | Tuesday 12:15 pm | Tuesday 11:45 am | Tuesday 11:15 am | Tuesday 9:15 am |
For games played from 4 to 31 October 2026 (US dates), before the US clocks go back, every time in the table is one hour earlier. A few dates break the weekly pattern, shown here in Sydney time:
- Thanksgiving week: games at 12:00 pm on Thursday 26 November, at 5:00 am, 8:30 am and 12:20 pm on Friday 27 November, and at 7:00 am on Saturday 28 November.
- Christmas Day, Friday 25 December: games at 5:00 am, 8:30 am and 12:15 pm on Saturday 26 December.
- Week 18: the three Saturday 9 January games start at 5:00 am, 8:30 am and 12:00 pm on Sunday 10 January.
- Super Bowl LXI, scheduled for Sunday 14 February 2027 in Los Angeles, falls on Monday 15 February.
A 5:00 am game is one to bet the night before or not at all. Team news lands overnight too, including any late change at quarterback.
Ties and overtime in NFL bets
Rule 16 of the NFL's 2026 playing rules gives a regular-season game level after four quarters one 10-minute overtime period. Both teams must get the chance to possess the ball, unless the side kicking off scores a safety on the first possession. After that a team that is ahead wins, and if the scores are still level the next score wins. Still level after 10 minutes, the game is a tie. Playoff games play 15-minute periods until somebody wins.
Of the 1,359 regular-season games completed from 2021 to 2025, 83 (6.1%) went to overtime and 4 (0.3%) ended tied. The latest, as at October 2026, was on 28 September 2025 (US date): Green Bay and Dallas were 37-37 after four quarters, kicked a field goal each in overtime and finished 40-40.
How a tie settles depends on your bookmaker's rules. Bookmakers authorised in NSW work under that state's Bookmaker Declared Betting Events Betting Rules unless something else is agreed. A market that prices the tie is decided on the score at the end of regulation (clause 5.1.7). One that does not pays a bet on a tied team its face value divided by the two teams tied (clause 5.1.8), the method dead heat rules explains.
With illustrative prices and $30 on each bet, a 20-20 finish after overtime settles like this:
| Bet | Price | How it settles | Return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Team A, two-way head to head | $1.75 | Face value 30 x 1.75 = $52.50, divided by 2 | $26.25 |
| The tie, three-way market | $15.00 | Level at the end of regulation | $450.00 |
| Team A, three-way market | $1.85 | The tie won instead | Nothing |
| Team B +2.5 | $1.90 | 20 + 2.5 = 22.5, ahead of 20 | $57.00 |
| Team A -2.5 | $1.90 | 20 - 2.5 = 17.5, behind 20 | Nothing |
| Under 41.5 total points | $1.90 | 40 points scored | $57.00 |
Settled at the end of regulation, a three-way market's tie selection wins whenever a game is level after four quarters, so a team that wins in overtime is a losing bet there. From 2021 to 2025 the tie selection won in all 83 overtime games, not just the 4 that finished level. Bookmakers not bound by the NSW rules write their own tie rules, so check yours.
Field goals, touchdowns and the half point
NFL margins pile up on 3 and 7 because of Rule 11's scoring: a field goal is worth 3, and a touchdown with its kicked try 7, the second most common margin at 7.7% from 2021 to 2025.
So -2.5, -3 and -3.5 are three different NFL bets. On a 3-point win the first wins, the second is a push that commonly returns the stake, and the third loses, which is why a half point across 3 costs more than one almost anywhere else. NFL key numbers has the full margin table and the price of each half point.
Player props, the Super Bowl and futures
Player props come as a milestone, such as a quarterback to pass for 250 yards or more, or as an over/under line on yards, receptions or touchdowns. They settle on the statistics your bookmaker's terms name, commonly the NFL's official figures, and NFL player props covers how those lines are set.
In touchdown scorer markets, your bookmaker's terms decide whether a passing touchdown counts for the passer and what happens if a player does not take the field, and the anytime touchdown scorer guide compares the common rule types.
Futures run all season: the Super Bowl winner, conference and division winners, regular-season win totals and the awards. Your stake is tied up for months, and adding 1 / price across all 32 teams shows the margin built into the market, which futures betting explained works through.
The season ends with Super Bowl LXI, and Super Bowl betting from Australia covers its markets, its props and how it settles.
How to bet on the NFL from Australia
- Check the bookmaker on ACMA's register of licensed wagering providers, which lists each trading name and its licensing authority. A US state licence does not count, and a site with no Australian licence cannot lawfully offer you betting here, so its customers lose Australian protections.
- Set a deposit limit when you open the account. The national consumer protection framework requires licensed online bookmakers to offer one, and a cut to your limit applies straight away while a rise waits 7 days.
- Find the game in Australian time and check the date. A game the NFL lists for Sunday 15 November is played on Monday 16 November in eastern Australia.
- Choose the market and read its rules: whether overtime counts, how a tie is paid, and what happens to a prop if the player does not play.
- Convert any American odds from US coverage to decimal before you compare them.
- Compare the same market at more than one bookmaker, the line as well as the price.
- Place the bet before kick-off. Under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, a provider may offer online betting on a sporting event only before it starts (s 8A(3), read with s 10B). It must also hold a licence under an Australian state or territory law (s 15AA).
Risk: Betting involves risk. NFL games run while most of Australia sleeps, so set your stakes before you go to bed and never stay up to win back an earlier loss. See responsible gambling for limits and support.
Costly NFL betting mistakes
All prices in the table are illustrative:
| Mistake | What it costs | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Treating a three-way team bet as if overtime counted | Your team wins 23-20 in overtime, but the market settled at 20-20 and your bet lost | Read the market name and its tie rule |
| Assuming a two-way head to head cannot tie | $30 at $1.75 on a tied game returns $26.25 under the NSW rules, $3.75 lost although your team was not beaten | Find the tie rule before you bet |
| Mistaking +155 for $1.55 | You read +155 as a 64.5% chance (1 / 1.55) when it is 39.2% (1 / 2.55), so every decimal price you compare it with is misjudged | Convert first: 155 / 100 + 1 = $2.55 |
Skip an NFL bet when you cannot find how its market settles a tie, or when the price only made sense before team news you have not seen. Skip it too when the only reason to bet is a loss earlier in the week.
Comparing NFL prices across bookmakers
B337's Terminal is a live odds board with prices from 40+ bookmakers across racing and sports. Sports covered include AFL, NRL, NBA, soccer, tennis and more, whenever bookmakers have markets up. Each bookmaker has its own column for head to head, line and total markets, plus player props where they are offered, and the best available price on each selection is picked out.
Not every bookmaker prices every game. A free account opens a limited view of the Terminal with live odds.
The board reads prices on a repeating cycle rather than tick by tick, so what it shows can lag the bookmaker's own price: check the line, the price and the tie rule with your bookmaker before you bet. As software rather than a bookmaker, B337 takes no bets and never holds your betting funds, which stay in your own bookmaker accounts.
Risk: Betting involves risk. Comparing bookmakers changes the price you take, the game still decides the result, and a season of NFL bets can finish behind. See responsible gambling for limits and support.
