Australia's major harness races are its Group 1 features: the Inter Dominion pacing and trotting championships, the Miracle Mile at Menangle, the cups of the Australian Grand Circuit and a few rich races for young horses. On Harness Racing Australia's (HRA's) 2026 feature race calendar the richest were The Eureka at $1,500,000, The Nullarbor at $1,250,000, and the Miracle Mile and the Inter Dominion Pacing Grand Final at $1,000,000 each.
Feature races bet differently from a weeknight card: many run as heats and a final, markets open weeks out, and a final gets its own barrier draw. Dates, hosts and prize money change every year, so every figure here is dated, and none is a selection. How the code works is covered in harness racing betting.
Harness racing feature races through the year
The Grand Circuit ties the leading open-age pacing features into a points series, and HRA's page gives 100 points for a win, 60 for second and 40 for third. It has counted only Australian races since 2023, as HRA announced in December 2022. The trotters have had their own series, the Trotting Masters, since 2012. The 2026 versions of the main races, from HRA's calendars (checked October 2026):
| 2026 date | Race | Track | 2026 stakes | Points series |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14 February | A G Hunter Cup | Melton, VIC | $250,000 | Grand Circuit |
| 14 February | Great Southern Star Final (trotters) | Melton, VIC | $250,000 | Trotting Masters |
| 14 March | Miracle Mile | Menangle, NSW | $1,000,000 | Grand Circuit |
| 17 April | The Nullarbor | Gloucester Park, WA | $1,250,000 | None |
| 24 April | Fremantle Cup | Gloucester Park, WA | $300,000 | Grand Circuit |
| 18 July | Inter Dominion Pacing Grand Final | Albion Park, QLD | $1,000,000 | Grand Circuit |
| 18 July | Inter Dominion Trotting Grand Final | Albion Park, QLD | $500,000 | Trotting Masters |
| 17 October | Victoria Cup | Melton, VIC | $250,000 | Grand Circuit |
| 21 November | The Eureka (3 and 4 year old pacers) | Menangle, NSW | $1,500,000 | None |
| 5 December | Queensland Championship | Albion Park, QLD | $250,000 | Grand Circuit |
| 11 December | WA Pacing Cup | Gloucester Park, WA | $450,000 | Grand Circuit |
Treat it as one year's version: HRA marks its calendar as subject to change, and the 2026 Australian Grand Circuit calendar and 2026 Trotting Masters calendar list each series' races.
HRA's 2026 pacers calendar also lists four Group 1 derbies, in NSW (14 March, $200,000), Queensland (18 July, $150,000), Victoria (17 October, $150,000) and WA (30 October, $200,000), each with an Oaks for fillies. Its richest two-year-old race is the Protostar (11 July, $500,000), and the Golden Nugget (6 November, $200,000) is for four-year-olds.
How the Inter Dominion works: heats, points and the final
HRA's Inter Dominion page records a three-year hosting agreement for Queensland from 2025 to 2027. Under the 2026 conditions set by Racing Queensland and the Albion Park Harness Racing Club, the pacing championship ran like this:
- two rounds of qualifying heats at Albion Park, on 4 and 11 July 2026, three heats a round of up to 12 starters, all over 2,138 m from a mobile start;
- round one heats seeded from the series rankings and round two drawn at random, with a start needed in each round unless exempted;
- points in each heat by finishing place, 16 for a win, then 13, 11, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 for 12th, plus bonus points for the fastest individual last half (2), last quarter (1) and last mile (1);
- no points for a horse disqualified or failing to finish, shared points for a dead heat, and 6 points each for a heat abandoned and not rerun;
- a Grand Final on 18 July 2026 over 2,680 m for the 12 highest point-scorers, plus the winner of the Group 1 Rising Sun if it was a four-year-old that met the conditions.
Ties for the last spot went to the better best finish, then the better second-best finish, then the series ranking.
Worked: who makes the final on points
Example: Illustrative horses under the 2026 points table, not real results.
| Horse | Round one heat | Round two heat | Bonus points | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Horse P | Wins: 16, with the fastest last half | Gallops and is disqualified: 0 | 2 | 16 + 0 + 2 = 18 |
| Horse Q | 4th: 9 | 4th: 9, with the fastest last quarter | 1 | 9 + 9 + 1 = 19 |
| Horse R | 3rd: 11 | 6th: 7 | 0 | 11 + 7 = 18 |
Two fourths outscore a heat win and a disqualification, and if P and R tie on 18 for the last place in the final, P goes through on its better best finish. A full heat hands out 16 + 13 + 11 + 9 + 8 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 85 placing points plus 4 bonus points.
Barrier draws for finals
How a final's barriers are drawn decides how much of a finalist's price is luck. The 2026 Inter Dominion conditions drew the Grand Final barriers at random, and HRA's results show 13 starters in the 2026 Pacing Grand Final: 7 on the front row and 6 on the second. Before that draw, each qualifier had a 7 / 13 = 53.8% chance of a front-row gate.
The 2026 Miracle Mile, also drawn at random, had eight starters, all on the front row (HRA's results for 14 March 2026). The Eureka uses a preferential draw on age and sex (HRA's race FAQ, checked October 2026). In Victoria a series' final uses the type of draw its heats used unless Harness Racing Victoria approves otherwise (racing guideline 8.12, checked October 2026). Harness racing barrier draws covers what each gate is worth.
Worked: a finalist's price before and after the draw
Example: Illustrative chances, not a real horse. You rate Horse X a 30% chance in the final from the front row and 15% from the second row, with 13 starters drawn at random into 7 front-row and 6 second-row gates.
| When you bet | Working | Chance | Fair price |
|---|---|---|---|
| After the draw, front row | your rating | 30.0% | 1 / 0.30 = $3.33 |
| After the draw, second row | your rating | 15.0% | 1 / 0.15 = $6.67 |
| After the heats, before the draw | 7/13 x 0.30 + 6/13 x 0.15 | 23.1% | 1 / 0.2308 = $4.33 |
| Before the heats, with an 85% chance of making the final | 0.85 x 0.2308 | 19.6% | 1 / 0.1962 = $5.10 |
Before the heats, $4.80 is longer than the $4.33 a finalist is worth but too short once the 15% chance of missing the final counts: 0.1962 x 4.80 - 1 = -0.058, about 5.8 cents lost per dollar. Ask for $5.10 or more; the 85% is your own estimate.
Risk: Betting involves risk. Your own chances drive every fair price in the table, and a finalist priced above them can still lose the final. See responsible gambling for limits and support.
Futures and all-in rules on feature races
Feature markets open early, and an all-in bet loses its stake if the horse does not start. WA's Rules of Wagering 2005, which cover harness races, make a WA bookmaker's bets play or pay unless agreed otherwise, except bets struck on the day of the race (r 57).
For a series of heats and a final, bets on the event are play or pay unless they are bets on the final struck on its race day. A bet on the final is also not affected by a rival's withdrawal or disqualification arising from a heat (r 60).
Online bookmakers set their own futures terms. All in betting explains the rule, and futures betting on horse racing covers when an early price is worth taking.
Two edge cases:
- The Eureka is a slot race: its 10 slots are sold as licences, and each holder can name the eligible horse it will start up to 7 days before the race (HRA's race FAQ, checked October 2026). A horse backed early that no slot holder picks never starts.
- A series can run its heats and final on one night: the 2026 Great Southern Star for trotters held two heats and the final at Melton on 14 February, all over 1,720 m (HRA's results).
Risk: Betting involves risk. Money on an early bet is locked away for weeks and lost outright if the horse misses the race, and there is no guarantee of profit. See responsible gambling for limits and support.
Miracle Mile betting and the other feature sprints
The Miracle Mile is a Group 1 sprint for pacers over 1,609 m from a mobile start at Menangle, and a Grand Circuit race. HRA's 2026 calendar billed two Group 2 sprints on 7 March as Miracle Mile Qualifiers. HRA's Menangle track page gives a circumference of 1,400 m, so the trip is a little over one lap (1,609 / 1,400 = 1.15 laps).
A mile leaves little time to recover from a slow beginning or a wide trip, so early speed and the map carry more weight than in a 2,680 m final; harness racing speed maps builds one.
Every Group 1 pacing mile (1,609 m) on HRA's 2026 pacers calendar was set for Menangle. Among them are the Chariots of Fire for four-year-olds, the Queen Elizabeth II Mile for mares and the Len Smith Mile, run the same night as The Eureka.
What heat form tells you about a final
Read heat form into a final with three adjustments:
- Distance: the 2026 Inter Dominion heats were 2,138 m and the finals 2,680 m, 2,680 - 2,138 = 542 m further.
- Draw: a heat drawn one way says little about a final drawn again at random.
- Driver: in Victoria a qualifier's driver can change for the final if the change is notified in time (racing guideline 8.13, checked October 2026).
Mistakes when betting feature races
- Paying a finalist's price before the heats. $4.80 against a fair $5.10 loses 5.8 cents per dollar on average.
- Betting the final at a front-row price before the draw. $3.50 with the draw still to come is worth 0.2308 x 3.50 - 1 = -0.192, a 19.2% loss per dollar on average.
Where B337 fits on a feature night
B337 makes no selections and does not set conditions or settle bets. The Terminal shows prices from 40+ bookmakers across racing and sports, with harness meetings on its racing board and exchange back and lay prices, flucs and closing lines beside the bookmaker prices. Prices are read on a repeating cycle, so after a draw or a scratching, confirm the price in your bookmaker account before you bet. A free account opens a limited view of the Terminal with live odds.
Risk: Betting involves risk. A feature race is still one race, a horse priced above your figure can lose it, and a big night is no reason to stake more than you planned.
