Turnover in betting is the total amount you stake over a period, counted on every bet whether it wins or loses. With illustrative stakes, eight $25 win bets and one $15 each way bet come to 8 x $25 + 2 x $15 = $230 of turnover before any result is known, because an each way bet is two bets.
Turnover measures how much you bet, not how you went. It is the base for yield, it sets the long-run cost of betting, and racing rules and promotions use the same word. Recording it is part of testing any betting strategy.
Turnover vs profit, worked through
Example: Illustrative month: 96 bets of $25, funded by $300 of deposits, with winnings bet again as they came in.
| Line | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Turnover | 96 x $25 | $2,400 |
| Returns, stakes included | Paid out on the winners | $2,292 |
| Profit | $2,292 - $2,400 | -$108 |
| Yield | -$108 / $2,400 | -4.5% |
| Times the deposits were bet | $2,400 / $300 | 8 |
$2,400 went through the account, but the money lost was $108, because most turnover comes back. Turnover can also run far past what was deposited, since each dollar returned can be bet again. Yield, profit divided by turnover, lets records of different sizes be compared: on illustrative figures, $40 profit on $800 is 5.0%, and $150 on $6,000 is 2.5%. ROI vs yield covers the measures and what to count as turnover, and how to track betting results the record that produces them.
Why turnover sets the cost of betting
Every price carries the bookmaker's margin, so for a punter with no edge the expected cost of betting is turnover x the share the margin keeps. With an illustrative margin of 5 cents in every dollar staked:
expected cost = $2,400 x 0.05 = $120, which is 40% of the $300 deposited
The cost follows turnover, not deposits. Betting winnings again, staking systems and chasing losses all push more money through the same prices, so they raise the expected cost as well. Under the national framework, online bookmakers must send active customers a monthly activity statement showing the number of bets and the net result, so the trend is easy to check.
Risk: Betting involves risk. Turnover that keeps rising after losses is a warning sign, not a plan. Online bookmakers must offer deposit limits, and a lower limit applies straight away. See responsible gambling for limits and support.
Total turnover in tote pools, exchanges and racing rules
The word also covers money bet by everyone:
- In a tote pool, all bets of one type on a race (or a set of races, such as a quaddie) are pooled and the operator's commission comes out before the winning bets share the rest. Under the Northern Territory's totalisator rules, for example, the most that can be paid out is the total bet, less refunds, less commission. Each dividend is rounded down to a multiple of 5c, and the operator keeps the rounding. The commission is a share of the pool's turnover that the operator deducts, up to a cap those rules set.
- On an exchange, commission is charged on your net winnings in a market, not on your turnover, so a losing position pays none.
- Some minimum bet limit rules sort wagering operators by how much they turn over. In WA, the Gaming and Wagering Commission sets different limits for WA domestic betting operators with racing-year turnover of $3 million or more and for those under $3 million. Racing Queensland's conditions split operators at $100 million of annual turnover (both checked October 2026). Minimum bet limits explained covers what those limits require.
Turnover in a promotion's terms
In a promotion's terms the word means betting you must do, often at a minimum price, before a reward is credited or money can be withdrawn. Under the National Consumer Protection Framework, winnings from a bonus bet must be withdrawable without any turnover requirement (National Policy Statement, updated 3 May 2022), while each bookmaker's terms decide how the bonus bet itself works. Betting turnover requirements covers what meeting one costs, the qualifying bets and minimum odds that count, and the deposit turnover some bookmakers ask for before a withdrawal.
