Qualifying bet meaning in Australian betting promotions

Qualifying bet meaning: the bet a promotion's terms require before a reward is paid, the tests it must pass, and what it costs to lay one in matched betting.

By the B337 team. Last updated 7 October 2026.

    The short answer

    • A qualifying bet is the bet a promotion's terms require before the bookmaker pays the reward, such as a stake refund or a bonus bet, and it is usually placed with your own cash.
    • It counts only if it passes every test in the terms, including the market, bet type, minimum price, stake limits, timing and any opt-in, and the bookmaker decides whether it qualifies.
    • In matched betting it is laid on an exchange: for example, $40 at $2.60 laid at $2.70 with an illustrative 3% commission costs $2.22 whichever way the race goes.
    • With a provider licensed in Australia, a qualifying bet only earns offers to existing account holders, because rewards for opening an account are banned nationally, from 26 May 2019 (26 November 2019 in NSW).

A qualifying bet is the bet a promotion's terms require you to place before the bookmaker pays the reward, such as a stake refund or a bonus bet. Qualifying means passing every test in the terms, from the market and bet type to the minimum price, stake and timing; a bet that misses one adds nothing to the promotion.

How a qualifying bet earns a promotion

Most offer shapes in betting promotions in Australia start with one: a refund, boost or saver applies only to a bet that fits its terms.

Example: Illustrative terms, not a current offer. Opt in, then bet at least $20 in cash on a fixed-odds win bet at $2.00 or longer in Race 6 at one named meeting. If the runner finishes second or third, the stake comes back as a bonus bet, up to $50.

A $40 win bet at $2.60, placed after opting in, qualifies. A winner returns 40 x 2.60 = $104 as normal. Second or third loses the $40 but brings a $40 bonus bet, and anything worse is an ordinary losing bet.

The tests a bet must pass to qualify

The bookmaker applies the terms and decides. Against the illustrative terms above:

    BetQualifies?Why
$40 win at $2.60, after opting inYesIt passes every test
$40 win at $1.90NoIt is under the $2.00 minimum odds requirement
$40 win at $2.60, before opting inNoThe promotion opt-in has to come first
$40 each way at $6.00NoEach way is two bets, and the terms name a win bet
$70 win at $3.20Yes, with the refund cappedA second or third brings a $50 bonus bet, so $20 of the stake has no cover

Also check the time window, any one-per-customer limit, whether a cashed-out bet counts, and how a scratching, void or dead heat is treated.

Qualifying bets in matched betting, and the qualifying loss

Matched betting covers the qualifying bet with a lay, an exchange bet that the selection will not win: lay stake = back stake x back odds / (lay odds - commission rate). With illustrative prices, here is the $40 at $2.60 laid at $2.70, at an illustrative 3% commission on net winnings:

    StepWorkingResult
    Lay stake40 x 2.60 / (2.70 - 0.03)$38.95
    Liability38.95 x (2.70 - 1)$66.22
    Runner wins40 x (2.60 - 1) - 66.22-$2.22
    Runner loses38.95 x (1 - 0.03) - 40-$2.22

The $2.22 is the qualifying loss, and the back lay calculator runs the sum for any stake and price. The reward here, a $40 bonus bet on a second or third, pays its winnings only under stake not returned settlement, so it is worth less than $40 of cash.

Risk: Betting involves risk. Your lay covers nothing until it is matched at the planned price, prices can move between the two bets, and the bookmaker can rule that a bet did not qualify. See responsible gambling for limits and support.

Why a qualifying bet in Australia only earns offers on existing accounts

Measure 4 of the National Consumer Protection Framework rules out any incentive to open an account or refer someone, whether credit, a voucher, a reward or another benefit. It has applied since 26 May 2019, and in NSW since 26 November 2019. So a qualifying bet with a provider licensed here earns an offer on an account you already hold, never a joining bonus. A site promising Australians one is a warning sign, so check it on ACMA's register. Sign-up bonuses in Australia covers the ban in full.

Who places each bet when B337 runs a session

B337's Full Automation runs sessions in bookmaker accounts you hold, from the bot on your own computer, which has to stay on. The sessions use only promotions already issued to those accounts, and the bookmaker judges whether a bet qualifies. B337 automates the bookmaker side only: it never places the lay, so a bonus bet one of your sessions puts on carries no hedge until you place one yourself. Full Automation is set up with the team, the price is confirmed before you pay, and bets use credits, a per-bet usage charge.

Risk: Betting involves risk. Many bookmakers restrict automated betting in their terms, and any of them may cut your stakes, void bets or shut the account. See responsible gambling for limits and support.

    Questions

What is a qualifying bet in matched betting?
It is the bookmaker half of a matched pair: the cash bet that earns the promotion, covered by a lay of the same selection on an exchange. The lay keeps the result about the same either way, so the expected cost of earning the offer is a small qualifying loss, not the stake.
Does a bet placed with a bonus bet count as a qualifying bet?
Only where the promotion's terms allow it. Where they ask for a cash stake, a bet placed with a bonus bet earns nothing from the offer, so check before you use one on a race or game an offer covers.
What happens to a qualifying bet on a scratched runner?
On a race-day bet, the stake on a scratched runner is refunded, so the bet neither wins nor loses (a futures bet struck before final acceptances can be all in under the terms that apply). Whether a refunded bet still counts, and whether you may place another qualifying bet in its place, is up to the promotion's terms.
Can a bookmaker refuse to count my qualifying bet?
Yes. The bookmaker decides whether a bet qualifies under its terms, and it can also stop sending offers to an account. Keep a copy of the terms as they stood when you placed the bet.
