A palpable error is a price, line or market so plainly wrong that the bookmaker's terms let it void the bet or settle it at the price it meant to offer. Palpable means obvious, from a Latin word for something you can touch, and the same clause may be headed obvious error or manifest error.
It covers a mistake anyone could see at the time, not a price that later moved against the bookmaker. Each online bookmaker writes its own clause, and some official rule books are stricter. Bookmaker cancelled my bet covers every kind of void, and betting accounts in Australia the wider account rules.
What a palpable error clause usually says
Wording differs between bookmakers, but a clause generally deals with three things:
- What counts: a price, line, total or market term clearly out of step with the market or the event, such as a misplaced decimal point, two prices swapped or a line given to the wrong team.
- The remedy: the bet is voided and the stake returned, or resettled at the price or line the bookmaker says it should have offered. In a multi, the leg in error may be corrected or removed.
- Timing: some clauses let the bookmaker act after the bet has settled and take back a payout.
Search your bookmaker's terms for "palpable", "obvious", "error" and "void" to find its clause.
How three rule books define an error
| Rule book | Who it covers | What it treats as an error | What follows |
|---|---|---|---|
| NSW Bookmaker Declared Betting Events Betting Rules, rule 5.1.5 | Sport and other events with bookmakers authorised in NSW | An error resulting from a computer or other technical malfunction, or evidence of fraud | Otherwise the payout quoted when you bet is the agreed payout |
| Racing Victoria Bookmakers' Internet Betting Rules 10.1 and 10.2, version 2023.1 | Victorian bookmakers' internet bets | A recording error from a technical malfunction, not human error or the bookmaker's intervention, that the bookmaker can show Racing Victoria is a manifest error | Otherwise the accepted bet is a binding contract |
| WA Rules of Wagering 2005, rule 62U | RWWA's fixed-odds bets on races | An inadvertent mistake or inaccuracy, whether caused by human error, computer malfunction or any other reason, a misstated price included | RWWA may void and refund the bet, or recalculate a multi without the leg |
WA's rule names human error, while the NSW and Victorian rules speak of technical malfunctions, so a trader's typing slip is treated differently depending on whose rules apply.

Palpable errors, worked through
With illustrative prices:
| What went wrong | Your bet | As struck | Voided | Resettled |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Decimal slip: $41.00 shown, $4.10 meant | $20 to win | 20 x 41.00 = $820 | $20 back | 20 x 4.10 = $82 |
| Wrong units: basketball total shown as 18.5 points, 185.5 meant | $50 on the over at $1.88 | 50 x 1.88 = $94 | $50 back | $94 or nothing, on the real 185.5 line |
The decimal slip implies a 1 / 41.00 = 2.4% chance against 1 / 4.10 = 24.4% elsewhere, and a professional basketball game finishing under 19 points is close to impossible. A gap that size is what makes an error palpable.
Not an error: taking $3.40 on a runner that starts at $2.20. The market moved after your bet, and the bet stands.
How to dispute a palpable error decision
- Ask the bookmaker in writing which clause it used, what price it says was correct and why, and get a dispute reference number.
- Keep the bet ID, a timed screenshot of the price, other markets at that moment and the terms as they read that day.
- If it stays unresolved, find the bookmaker's licensing authority on ACMA's register. The NT Wagering Commission takes complaints about how an operator handled a wager within 60 days of you becoming aware of the issue, and it can declare a wager void or valid.
With a bookmaker authorised in NSW, a dispute over how its events rules decide a bet can go to the Declared Betting Events Betting Disputes Panel within 28 days of the event. How to complain about a bookmaker has every route, and void bet explains what a void returns.
Risk: Betting involves risk. Backing a price you can see is a mistake is not a plan: the bet can be voided or cut back after the result, and there is no guarantee of profit. See responsible gambling for limits and support.
