    Betting deposit methods in Australia

Betting deposit methods in Australia after the credit ban: debit cards, bank transfers and PayID, how long each takes to land, and how deposit limits apply.

By the B337 team. Last updated 7 October 2026.

    The short answer

    • Australian betting accounts take non-credit payments such as debit cards, bank transfers and PayID, and each bookmaker's terms set which of them it accepts.
    • Credit cards, wallets that draw on a credit card and cryptocurrency are off the list: the credit ban has kept online and phone betting providers from taking them since 11 June 2024.
    • The Reserve Bank describes PayID payments on the New Payments Platform as near real-time at any hour, while direct entry transfers have taken between a few hours and a day.
    • A deposit limit counts money in by every method, and a provider must not accept a deposit that would take you past it.
    • A bank's gambling block works at the card or account the money leaves from, and you arrange it with the bank, not the bookmaker.

Betting deposit methods in Australia are the non-credit ways to fund a bookmaker account: a debit card, a bank transfer, PayID and other fast bank payments. Where a bookmaker offers them, you can also use BPAY, a digital wallet that draws on a debit card or bank account, or cash paid in at a retail outlet. The credit ban in the Interactive Gambling Act, in force since 11 June 2024, takes three options away: a credit card, a wallet or other account that draws on one, and digital currency such as cryptocurrency.

The law decides what is out; each bookmaker's terms decide what it takes, any minimum deposit and how fast money shows in your balance. What the method changes is mostly time: a PayID payment can land in moments at 2 am on a Sunday, while a standard bank transfer sent on a Friday night can sit until Monday.

Deposit methods allowed after the credit ban

These are the common deposit types and how each behaves. The timing is the payment system's, not any bookmaker's, so check your bookmaker's terms for when it credits your balance.

Credit cardNoNot applicableBanned even when the card is in credit
Cryptocurrency or other digital currencyNoNot applicableBanned for online and phone betting

The Act's list is short. Section 15C(4A) bans a credit card, any account, service or facility that pays from a credit card linked to it, and digital currency, plus any method the Minister adds by legislative instrument. If a new kind of payment appears, ACMA's credit ban page is the place to confirm whether it is covered. Online providers also may not lend you money to bet or point you to a payday lender, and the credit card betting ban explains who the ban binds and why it exists.

How to deposit into a betting account

    1. Set or check your deposit limit before the first deposit, not after it.
    2. Log in through the bookmaker's own app, or the website listed on its row in ACMA's register of licensed providers, rather than through a link in an email or text.
    3. Open the deposit page and choose a method in your own name.
    4. Enter an amount inside your limit. For PayID or a bank transfer, copy the details and the reference from inside your account.
    5. Confirm, then check that the deposit appears in your transaction list, and keep the bank receipt until it does.

A PayID or account number that arrives in a message could come from a scammer, so use only the details shown inside your account. Betting account security covers phishing and fake sites, and betting accounts in Australia covers the rest of an account's rules.

    PayID betting deposits

PayID is an identifier, such as an email address, phone number or ABN, linked to a bank account. A payment to it runs on the New Payments Platform, which launched in February 2018 and which the Reserve Bank describes as giving near real-time funds availability, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Before you send, your bank shows the legal account name registered to the PayID, a check the Reserve Bank says reduces the risk of a misdirected payment.

Two habits make PayID work for a betting account. Copy the PayID from inside your account, and stop if the name your bank shows is not your bookmaker's. Payments on the platform settle between banks finally and irrevocably as they happen, so the time to check is before you send.

Speed cuts both ways. Money can reach a bookmaker within moments at any hour, which is why the deposit limit you set in daylight matters at midnight.

    Bank transfer betting deposits

A bank transfer to a bookmaker uses its BSB and account number plus a reference that ties the money to your account. In 2018 the Reserve Bank described how "pay anyone" transfers through the direct entry system settle in batches during the day. Funds can take between a few hours and a day to arrive, and weekends and public holidays can stretch that. If your bank sends the transfer as a fast payment over the New Payments Platform instead, it can arrive in moments.

Example: Illustrative timing, not any bank's or bookmaker's rule. You send $200 by standard transfer at 10:00 am on Wednesday 14 October 2026. Through direct entry it could reach the bookmaker that afternoon or not until Thursday morning, at the slow end of the few hours to a day the Reserve Bank describes. The same $200 sent by PayID could reach the bookmaker within moments, before 10:01 am.

A missing or wrong reference can leave a transfer received but unmatched to your account. If that happens, send the bookmaker your bank receipt rather than paying again.

    Debit cards and digital wallets

A debit card draws on your own money and is not on the banned list. Keep every deposit in your own name and on as few methods as you need. AUSTRAC's indicators for online betting include deposits made by a third party, deposits funded from a different account from the one winnings are paid to, and frequent changes of deposit method. Any of them can bring questions before a withdrawal.

A digital wallet is allowed only when the money comes from a debit card or a bank account. ACMA's credit ban page lists funds linked to a credit card, digital wallets included, among the banned methods, so never load a wallet from a credit card to bet. Section 15C(4A)(b) bans paying through any account, service or facility from a credit card linked to it. If your wallet holds both kinds of card, the one that actually pays decides which side of the ban the deposit falls on. A bookmaker may also refuse wallet payments it cannot trace to a non-credit source, so check its terms.

    Deposit limits count every method

A deposit limit caps the money going in, whichever route it takes. The national framework's policy statement says a provider must not accept further deposits above the limit you set, and it applies limits provider by provider. A request to lower a limit applies at once; a request to raise one waits 7 days.

Example: Illustrative. Your weekly limit is $175. On Monday you deposit $90 by PayID and on Wednesday $60 by debit card, so $90 + $60 = $150 has gone in. A $40 bank transfer on Friday would take the week to $150 + $40 = $190, over the limit, so the provider must not accept it. The most it can take that week is $175 - $150 = $25.

Deposit limits explained covers choosing a limit and splitting one budget across several accounts.

    Bank gambling blocks and deposits

A bank gambling block works one step earlier, on the card or account the money leaves from. Ask your bank exactly which payments its block covers, and apply it to every card and account you hold; how to block gambling transactions walks through it. A separate duty, set by the Interactive Gambling Amendment (Gambling Reform) Act 2026, starts on 1 January 2027: banks and other payment providers will have to block payments from Australian accounts that are headed for illegal gambling operators.

    Mistakes people make with deposits

    MistakeWhat it costs
Paying from a partner's card or bank accountAUSTRAC lists third-party deposits among its indicators, so a later withdrawal can be held for checks
Copying a PayID or account number from an email or textA scam can send the money elsewhere, and a fast payment settles as it happens
Expecting a weekend transfer to land todayDirect entry can wait for the next business day
Raising a limit to fit one more depositThe increase waits 7 days, by design
Paying a betting site that accepts credit cards or cryptocurrencyIt is not following Australian law, and ACMA warns illegal operators may not pay out; see offshore betting sites
Rotating through many cards and methodsAUSTRAC lists frequent changes of deposit method as an indicator, which can prompt checks

Risk: Betting involves risk. A fast deposit method makes money easy to move at any hour, so set a deposit limit you can afford to lose before your first deposit, and never fund betting with borrowed money. Questions

Can I use PayPal or another digital wallet to deposit into a betting account?
Yes, if the bookmaker accepts that wallet and the payment comes from a debit card or a bank account. A wallet payment drawn from a linked credit card is banned for online and phone betting.
Is PayID instant for betting deposits?
PayID runs on the New Payments Platform, which the Reserve Bank describes as near real-time, so the money normally reaches the bookmaker within moments of you sending it. When it shows in your betting balance depends on the bookmaker's own processing.
Can I deposit into a betting account with cryptocurrency?
No. Online and phone betting providers in Australia have been barred from accepting digital currency such as cryptocurrency since 11 June 2024, and a betting site that takes it from Australians is not following Australian law.
Why was my betting deposit declined?
It may have come from a credit card or a credit-linked wallet, taken you past your deposit limit, used a card in someone else's name, or hit a gambling block at your bank. If your own deposit limit or bank block stopped it, the tool is doing what you set it to do, so do not look for another way to pay; otherwise ask the bookmaker for its reason.
Does a bank transfer count towards my deposit limit?
Yes. The national framework's policy statement says a provider must not accept further deposits above your limit, and it makes no exception for transfers, PayID or any other method.
